New pain? Here’s what to do and what to avoid.

If something new just started hurting, your first instinct is probably to ask:

Should I rest it?

Should I stretch it?

Should I push through it?

Most active adults either ignore it and keep going or shut everything down completely. Neither is usually the best answer.

What to Do

Pay attention to how it behaves.

Does it warm up and feel better with movement?

Does it get worse the more you do?

Does it flare up later that night or the next day?

Your body is giving you information. Use it. Keep moving, but adjust.

Complete rest often leads to more stiffness and sensitivity.

Instead of stopping everything, modify what you’re doing:

  • Reduce load

  • Shorten range of motion

  • Slow things down

Find ways to move that don’t spike your symptoms. Look at what changed.

Did you increase intensity, volume, or frequency?

Start a new workout?

Sit more than usual?

Travel or change your routine?

Pain often shows up when something in your routine shifts. That context matters.

What to Avoid

Don’t ignore it and push through pain. If it’s getting sharper, more intense, or lingering longer, that’s your body asking for a change

Don’t stretch it aggressively right away. The area that feels tight isn’t always the problem. Sometimes it’s overworking or protecting something else, and overstretching can make it more irritated.

Don’t rely only on quick fixes. Ice, heat, massage, or adjustments can help temporarily, but if nothing changes in how your body moves, the issue often sticks around.

The Bigger Picture

Most new pain is your body’s way of saying something isn’t being managed well.

It doesn’t always mean something is seriously wrong, but it does mean something needs to change.

At Fearless Movement Rehab & Chiropractic, we look at how your body moves as a whole and help you figure out exactly what needs to be adjusted so the issue doesn’t turn into something bigger.

Because the goal isn’t just to get out of pain this week. It’s to keep you doing what you love without this becoming a recurring problem.

If something new has popped up and you’re not sure what to do next, you can book a free Discovery Call and talk through what’s going on and what the best next step is.

Catching things early is always easier than trying to fix them later.
